My grandmother, who we lovingly refer to as “Omi” immigrated to the United States from Germany when she was just a teenager. She left her family behind to build a better life for herself. She met my grandfather, “Opa”, at a German convention while he was on leave from the Navy. 60 years later, they still live in the same house, and despite being 90 years old, Omi still wakes up every single morning and cooks three meals a day, tends to her garden, and keeps her house spotless. Her love of baking is especially prevalent during the holidays, during which she handcrafts hundreds of traditional German cookie for her 9 grandchildren. I wanted to document her making one of her special holiday creations not only as a keepsake, but to look back on to remember how to re-create her delicious recipes for generations to come.
